Course Description:

High School Band is a course in which students enrich their life through the performance of music.  Students will build upon their knowledge and skills from past music instruction to effectively interpret and express music.

Courses in Concert Band are designed to promote students’ technique for playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments and cover a variety of band literature styles, primarily for concert performances and also include experiences in creating and responding to music.

Course Competencies/ Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to perform a varied repertoire of music.
• Students will be able to read eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and triplets.
• Students will be able to perform Dynamics from Fortissimo to Piano.
• Students will be able to interpret the varying tempos from adagio to allegro.
• Students will be able to confidently sight read selections of music to show their current knowledge.
• Students will be able to perform all flat scales on the circle of fifths.

Distribution of marking period grading components:

Performances =                100 Points (Includes Parades, Pep Band, Special Ensembles, and Concerts)

Daily Participation =        10 Points

Final Examination =         100 Points

Scale/Rudiment Tests =                50 Points

 

 

 

Attendance Policy

Student is expected to attend class each day they are present at school.  They are expected to participate in concerts and parades unless they have a valid excuse.   See Class Requirements section for specific grading rules.

Classroom Performance Expectations

1.  Students are required to participate and strive to improve.
2.  Daily points are derived from involvement and a willingness to participate. 
3. Tests, such as scale tests, are graded upon how many notes a student accurately hit.
4. Performance grades include any performance such as parades, pep band, or concerts. 
5. Students are responsible for their folder that includes performance pieces for the year will be assigned to each student at the beginning of the school year.

Classroom Level Consequences

Students not following classroom rules will receive the following consequences from Mr. Bowman

• Stage 1 - Student looses 1 daily point.
• Stage 2 - Student looses 2 daily points.
• Stage 3 - Student looses 3 daily points.
• Stage 4 - Student looses all points and is sent to the Office.

Class Requirements:

During class students will strive to perform a warm up (including scales) and attempt 3 music selections.  It is the student’s responsibility to have their instrument ready, music in order, and to be actively participating in class.

If a student is absent they must turn in a practice log to maintain their musical proficiency.  If absent from a parade or concert a student must provide a valid written excuse signed by the parent.  Otherwise they will receive a zero for the event.  If the excuse is acceptable, the student must still perform make up work.

Students will be required to be at a majority of all performances.  Students will be required to actively participate daily in classroom activities.

Plagiarism, Cheating, and Academic Integrity

Students must comply with all rules regarding these activities as outlined in the school’s student handbook including disciplinary action.

 

 

Methodology

While most class time is devoted to practice and performance, a combination of lecture, class discussion, videos, cooperative learning, and performance based learning will be used in this course. Grades will be determined by the satisfactory and timely completion of the assignments.

Extra Credit

Students can earn extra credit by making up points for missing a performance.  Students can also earn extra credit by participating in special ensembles at competition, including District, Pike County, and Solo and Ensemble Contests.
